Sit on the wrong bench board and you feel it immediately: a hot edge, a splinter, sap weeping out in the heat. Sit on the right one and you forget the wood is there at all.

Wall and ceiling cladding has to stay cool enough to lean on and hold its shape through years of heat-and-cool cycles, so it comes in tongue-and-groove profiles that lock together and hide their fasteners. Bench, backrest, and skirt boards are what your skin actually rests on, milled smooth with eased edges so nothing bites. Trim and moulding close the corners.

We went big on thermally modified wood, and we will tell you why. Cedar is not what it used to be: the old-growth boards our grandparents built with are nearly gone, and most cedar sold now warps and splinters.

Thermo-modified aspen, alder, spruce, and magnolia are baked near 400°F until the moisture and resin cook out, which leaves them darker, more dimensionally stable, and far slower to cup, rot, or shrink. We thought it mattered enough that we publicly stopped selling basic kits without it. We still carry honest natural alder, aspen, cedar, hemlock, and spruce for the builds that call for them.

Thermally modified wood isn’t for you if you want that cedar aroma, a light wood for a bright aesthetic (aspen), or the most budget friendly (raw spruce).  Everything here has its place and is proven in saunas.

These are boards we would clad our own saunas in.

    Price range: $6.15 through $61.45

Aspen does not bleed resin, does not splinter, and sits cool under bare skin even when the room is hot. The thermal modification, heat and steam and nothing else, takes it to a golden brown and stops the movement that opens gaps over the years. Aspen is the bench wood we sell more of than any other. PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 1X5 T&G STS4 Wall Cladding – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $6.76 through $67.58

A little more width, a little more calm. The 1×5 STS4 in thermo-aspen is a tongue-and-groove board, 0.59″ thick, milled 4.72″ wide for 4.3″ of coverage per row, so the wall reads with fewer seams across a given run. The thermal modification gives it a warm golden-brown tone all the way through, so cut ends match the face. Knot-free, no resin, stays cool to the touch. A clean choice when you want a broad, quiet wall. Sold by the linear foot.

The thermal modification takes it to a warm golden-brown that runs all the way through, so trimmed ends match the face and nothing reads as patchwork. Knot-free, no resin, stays cool against bare skin. Easy to run floor to ceiling and easy to pair with a contrasting bench or trim. Sold by the linear foot.

    PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen Groove-S 1X3 T&G Wall Cladding – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $5.98 through $59.84

Narrow boards, strong lines, a wall that looks expensive. The Groove-S in thermo-aspen is a precision-milled 1×3 T&G cladding, 0.59″ thick, with a tight shadow groove that turns an ordinary sauna wall into something with real visual snap. At 2.1″ coverage per board, you get a lot of linear rhythm per square foot. The thermo-aspen color, warm golden-brown, runs all the way through, so trimmed ends match the face and nothing reads as patchwork. Knot-free, no resin, stays cool. Pairs well with thicker profiles as a contrast element. Sold by the linear foot.

    PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen Grace™ 2X3 T&G Wall Cladding – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $4.60 through $45.98

Shadow grooves, thick boards, and a little architecture on your walls. The Grace 2×3 in thermo-aspen is a wide-reveal T&G wall cladding, 1.06″ thick with a 2.2″ coverage per board, designed to make a sauna wall look like a deliberate design choice instead of just paneling. The broad shadow groove between boards catches the light differently than a standard V-joint and gives the room depth. Thermal modification (heat and steam, no chemicals) locks in a warm golden-brown that won’t fade from humidity and won’t gap from moisture cycling. A real statement wall, without the pretension. PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 2X2 VA Outside Corner Trim – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $3.15 through $25.23

An outside corner with no raw edge showing. The thermo-aspen VA outside corner trim, 1.1″ on both faces, wraps the 90-degree exterior angle where two cladded walls meet and gives you a clean, mitered line in matching wood. Thermally modified aspen, so the golden-brown color runs all the way through, cut ends look the same as the face, and the piece won’t swell or bow in a wet sauna environment. No resin, no splinters. If you have a sauna room with an exterior corner (a bump-out, a partition, a two-room build), this is what goes there. Sold by the linear foot.

    PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 2X2 S4SEE SHP Moulding & Trim – Sauna Wood

Moulding that actually does something. The thermo-aspen 2×2 S4SEE SHP moulding at 1.1″ x 1.63″ is the piece you reach for when you need to cap a bench edge, cover a gap at the ceiling, frame a light channel, or add a clean horizontal break on a cladded wall. It’s the same thermal modification as the rest of our thermo-aspen line: heat and steam, no chemicals, golden-brown color all the way through, no warp, no resin, cool under bare skin. Available up to 10-foot lengths. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 1X2 SI Inside Corner Trim – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $1.58 through $12.65

Inside corners are where a finish job either looks done or looks almost done. The thermo-aspen SI inside corner trim, 0.55″ thick by 1.18″ wide, fits into the 90-degree seam where two cladded walls meet and gives you a clean, furniture-quality line instead of a butt joint. The thermal modification means the golden-brown color runs all the way through, so a cross-cut end won’t show pale raw wood. No resin, no splinters. Match it to your thermo-aspen walls and benches and the room reads as one continuous material. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 1X2 UK Door Trim – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $3.15 through $25.23

The detail that ties the room together. Thermo-aspen door trim in the UK profile finishes the gap between your cladding and the door frame with the same golden-brown wood you used on the walls. Thin at 0.47″, wide enough at 1.65″ to cover a clean reveal. No resin, no splinters, cool to the touch. Because it’s thermally modified, the color runs all the way through, so a mitered corner or an end cut won’t show pale raw wood. If you’ve gone with thermo-aspen walls and benches, this is the piece that makes it look intentional.

Same thermal modification as everything else in our thermo line: heat and steam, no chemicals, golden-brown color that runs all the way through the wood. Strong, stable, and cool to the touch. PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 2X6 S4SEE SHP Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $11.89 through $118.92

The bench wood we have the most opinions about. Thermally modified aspen, milled wide at 2×6 so a bench or backrest reads as one clean surface. Aspen doesn’t bleed resin, doesn’t splinter, and sits cool under bare skin even when the room is ripping. The thermal modification (heat and steam, nothing else) takes it to a golden brown and stops the expansion that opens gaps over the years. Aspen is the wood we sell more of than any other, season after season. Pair it with thermo-aspen or thermo-spruce walls for the matched look.

    PROSAUNAS Thermo-Aspen 2X3 S4SEE SHP Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $4.22 through $42.25

Narrow bench board, long track record. Thermo-aspen at 2×3 is what most Scandinavian builders reach for when they want a clean, knot-free seat that won’t gap or warp over the years. The thermal modification (heat and steam, nothing else) turns plain aspen into a golden brown that reads as traditional to American eyes, then locks the wood so it can’t hold moisture and won’t move on you. No resin, no splinters, cool under bare skin. Thermo-aspen is the wood we reach for first, and we’d put this board in our own sauna without a second thought. Sold by the linear foot, free samples available. Questions?

PROSAUNAS Hemlock 1/2X4 VG T&G V2E Wall Cladding – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $4.00 through $40.07

Pale walls, tight joints, almost no smell. This is Hemlock 1/2×4 VG T&G V2E wall cladding: clear A+ grade, 0.44″ thick, 3.49″ of coverage per board, V-joint profile, milled in Canada. If cedar is the sauna your grandfather built, hemlock is the sauna you’d design today. Quiet, bright, modern. It’s the cladding choice for a contemporary build that wants clean pale walls and a room that doesn’t smell like the wood. Ben likes the hemlock look. The honest note: hemlock walls will shift to a slight yellow tint under artificial light over time, more noticeable in rooms without natural light. For the brightest long-term pale look, our thermo-aspen cladding stays truer. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Hemlock 2X4 VG S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $10.29 through $102.85

Thick, pale, and honest about what it is. Hemlock 2×4 VG S4SEE is 1.5″ of clear, knot-free hemlock bench stock, 3.5″ wide, surfaced and eased, milled in Canada. At this thickness the bench edge reads as a real piece of wood, not a veneer. Low resin, even texture, almost no scent. We stock the clear VG grade because it’s the one we’d use. Honest note: hemlock at 1.5″ thick moves more through the heat cycle than thermo-aspen, and over years small gaps can open at the joints. For tight long-term joints, thermo-aspen is a better bet. For a pale, modern bench in clear North American wood, this is a good board. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Hemlock 1X6 VG S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $7.48 through $52.36

Six inches of pale, clear hemlock bench board. This is Hemlock 1×6 VG S4SEE: 0.69″ thick, 5.44″ wide, clear A+ grade, straight grain, no knots, almost no scent. Milled in Canada. The wider face means fewer boards on a bench, fewer gaps to manage, and a surface that reads as one clean piece from where you sit. We stock hemlock now because we found a clear grade worth standing behind. The light straw color is the point: it makes a modern, neutral room feel intentional, not default. One note: wide hemlock boards can pick up a mild yellow shift under artificial light over time, more noticeable than on narrower stock. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Hemlock 1X4 VG S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $5.07 through $50.75

Pale, clean, and quieter than you’d expect. This is Hemlock 1×4 VG S4SEE bench board: clear A+ grade, 0.69″ thick, 3.5″ wide, straight-grained, knot-free, milled in Canada. Hemlock has a light straw color and almost no scent, which makes it the right choice for anyone sensitive to cedar aroma or building a room with a modern, neutral look. We didn’t carry hemlock for years because we couldn’t find a supplier with clear grade we trusted. We carry this one now. One real note: hemlock can pick up a slight yellow tint under artificial light over time. If the room is well-lit with daylight it reads beautifully. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Western Red Cedar 1X4 STK T&G V2E Wall Cladding – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $2.64 through $21.16

The knottier option, and honestly the one with more character. This is Western Red Cedar 1×4 tongue-and-groove V2E wall cladding in STK grade, milled in Canada with natural tight knots and a warm reddish tone. At 0.70″ thick with a 2.95″ coverage width, it goes up fast and smells like every sauna movie you’ve seen. STK means you’ll have knots: they’re tight, they’re natural, and they give the room a cabin-honest feel that clear boards don’t. We carry a clear VG grade too if that’s your look. One heads-up: like all untreated cedar, this will move a little through the heat-and-cool cycle over the years. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Western Red Cedar 4X4 S4S Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $88.15 through $176.31

The part of the bench nobody photographs but everyone sits on. Western Red Cedar 4×4 S4S is a 3.5″ x 3.5″ structural post, surfaced four sides, milled in Canada. The bench leg. Cedar at this dimension is naturally rot-resistant without any treatment, which matters in a room that runs wet and hot. Available in 3, 4, 5, and 6 ft lengths to match common bench heights. Honest note: cedar posts move more through the heat cycle than steel, so snug your fasteners after the first season. A cedar frame with cedar bench stock means matched wood tones and no species mismatch. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Western Red Cedar 2X4 VG S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $14.82 through $148.27

Thick cedar bench boards in clear grade are not easy to find anymore. This is Western Red Cedar 2×4 VG S4SEE: 1.5″ thick, 3.5″ wide, knot-free vertical grain, surfaced and eased, milled in Canada. It’s the bench board for the builder who wants the full cedar package done at a quality level that won’t embarrass the rest of the build. The aroma is the real thing, the grain is clean, and the 1.5″ thickness gives the bench a visual weight that thinner boards don’t. Honest note: at roughly 3x the cost of thermo-aspen, this is a high-cost choice, and thermo wood holds its joints tighter over the years. But if clear cedar 2×4 bench stock is what you’re after, this is it. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Western Red Cedar 2X4 STK S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $4.67 through $37.40

Knots and all. Western Red Cedar 2×4 STK S4SEE is the thicker bench board for the builder who wants the weight and depth of a 1.5″ seat without paying clear-grade prices. STK means Select Tight Knot: the knots are natural, tight, and part of the character. At 3.5″ wide and 1.5″ thick, this is a substantial bench board with a real cedar look. The aroma is there, the reddish grain is there, and the lower price point makes a full bench build more realistic. Honest downside: the knots and the STK-grade movement mean these boards gap a bit more than clear VG over the years. Milled in Canada. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Western Red Cedar 1X6 VG S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $14.16 through $113.27

Wide benches read differently. A 5.44″ board shows less joint, more wood, and the cedar grain has room to do something. This is Western Red Cedar 1×6 VG S4SEE in clear vertical grain, knot-free A+ grade, milled in Canada. At 0.69″ thick, it’s the wider face of our cedar bench line and it makes a single-board backrest or a bench seat with far fewer pieces to install. We waited to carry cedar until we found a clear grade we’d actually put in our own build. The honest note: cedar runs warmer to the touch than aspen at full heat, and it moves more through the heat-and-cool cycle than thermally modified wood. For the classic cedar look at width, this is the board. Sold by the linear foot.

PROSAUNAS Western Red Cedar 1X4 VG S4SEE Bench, Backrest & Skirting – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $7.48 through $74.80

For years we steered people away from cedar. Then a clear vertical-grain run came through worth carrying. This is Western Red Cedar 1×4 VG S4SEE bench board, knot-free A+ grade, milled in Canada, 0.69″ thick and 3.5″ wide. It’s the bench face the classic sauna crowd wants: warm reddish tone, smooth texture, and that cedar aroma that hits you when the room heats. We waited because modern cedar quality slipped while prices climbed. We carry it now because this grade is actually worth installing. One honest note: cedar runs warmer to the touch than aspen under real heat. If cool skin contact is the priority, aspen benches with cedar walls is a better combo. Sold by the linear foot.

Grace is a wide-grooved designer tongue-and-groove, 1.1 in thick and 2.5 in wide, with a 2.2 in coverage and a shadow reveal that reads architectural rather than just “sauna wall.” It’s aspen, so the tone is pale, the surface is resin-free and smooth, and the room stays bright. We carry Grace because when a customer wants a contemporary room that looks considered, not just lined, this is what gets them there. Sold by the linear foot in lengths from 1 to 10 ft.

PROSAUNAS Aspen 2X2 VA Outside Corner Trim – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $3.07 through $24.57

Outside corners on a sauna wall are a small detail with a noticeable finish impact. The aspen 2×2 VA outside corner trim wraps the convex corner where two clad surfaces meet on the exterior angle: 1.1 in on both faces, in pale natural aspen that matches the wall boards. It gives the corner a finished look and protects the raw edge of the cladding at the same time. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 10 ft lengths at $3.07/lf, milled in Estonia.

    Price range: $3.60 through $36.07

1.1 in square, eased edges, four smooth faces. The aspen 2×2 S4SEE moulding is the heavier finishing piece: thicker than the 1×1 at 1.1″ square, with enough visual presence to anchor a ceiling line or a bench-frame transition. Same pale natural aspen as the cladding, so it blends rather than competes. The detail that separates a lined room from a finished room is usually this piece, or its absence. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 10 ft lengths at $3.60/lf, milled in Estonia.

This is the ProSaunas aspen 1×2 T-moulding: 0.67 in thick, 1.3 in wide, in pale natural aspen that matches our cladding and bench boards. It covers raw edges cleanly, sits flush where two surfaces meet at a seam, and disappears into the room the way good trim should. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 10 ft lengths at $2.54/lf, milled in Estonia.

PROSAUNAS Aspen 1X1 S4SEE SHP Moulding & Trim – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $2.13 through $17.09

Small piece, big finish difference. The aspen 1×1 S4SEE is a 0.83 in square moulding, surfaced smooth on all four sides with eased edges, and it’s what turns a clad sauna wall from a room with boards on it into a room that looks finished. Cap a horizontal run, cover a ceiling-to-wall seam, hide a gap where wall meets bench frame: this is the piece. Pale aspen, resin-free, cool to the touch. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 10 ft lengths at $2.13/lf, milled in Estonia.

PROSAUNAS Alder 2X2 VA Outside Corner Trim – Sauna Wood

    Price range: $3.07 through $24.57

Outside corners are the exposed edges, which means they’re what people see and touch first. This is the alder VA outside corner trim: 1.1" square (1.1 in x 1.1 in), angle-molded to wrap outside corners cleanly in natural alder. Same warm reddish-brown tone as the rest of the ProSaunas alder family, milled in Estonia, E1 certified. Beefier than the inside corner piece at the same 1.1" section, which makes sense: outside corners take contact. At $3.07 per linear foot it finishes the room where the finish matters most. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 8 ft lengths.

Use it to cap bench edges, frame out a heater enclosure, or add a furniture-quality line wherever you need one. Warm reddish-brown tone matches the alder bench and cladding family exactly. At $3.48 per linear foot it’s the least glamorous piece in the room, but the room looks noticeably better with it. Sold by the linear foot in 1, 8, 9, and 10 ft lengths.

PROSAUNAS Alder 1X2 SI Inside Corner Trim – Sauna Wood

This is the alder SI inside corner trim: 0.55" thick by 1.18" wide (0.55 in x 1.2 in), milled in Estonia to close out the inside corners where two cladded walls meet. Without it, the cladding ends look ragged. With it, the room reads furniture-quality. Natural alder, warm reddish-brown, E1 certified, and at $1.36 per linear foot it’s the lowest-cost piece in the alder family. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 8 ft lengths.

This is the piece that makes the transition from framing to cladding look intentional. Warm reddish-brown alder tone, fine grain, E1 certified. Water-repellent and cool to the touch. It’s a finishing detail, not a structural piece, but a sauna doorway without it reads unfinished. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 8 ft lengths.

Start Here – Choose Sauna Wood by Use

Different sauna projects call for different woods. Use this quick guide to
match your project with the right sauna wood, then explore the products
    above.

    Walls & ceiling cladding

For most indoor saunas you’ll want a smooth, low‑resin cladding that
stays stable and looks clean for years.

    • Thermo‑Aspen

      – our most popular choice for a modern look: warm
golden‑brown, minimal knots and excellent stability.  Use
thermally modified aspen instead of clear western red cedar.
Pairs well with black for modern nordic spaces.

    • Thermo‑Alder

      – warm, classic sauna look with tight joints and very little
movement.  More masculine, think 'cigar lounge'.

    • Plain Aspen

      – very light, smooth cladding that stays cool to the touch.  For clean,
      Bright Spaces.  Modern Scandinavian feel.

    • Thermo‑Spruce

      – our most budget‑friendly sauna wood. Visible knots give a more
rustic, cabin‑like look, and it’s a great choice if knots are
acceptable.  Use instead of knotty western red cedar.

    Benches & backrests

Bench wood touches skin, so comfort and safety matter more than
    anything else.

For a “no‑compromise on comfort” upgrade, many builders choose
Thermo‑Aspen benches even when they use Thermo‑Spruce on the walls and
    ceiling.

    Floors & duckboards

Floor grids and duckboards need to dry quickly and handle drips, sand
    and heavy use.

    Black & dark sauna wood

Dark woods create a dramatic “smoke sauna” or modern contrast look.
These options use factory finishes and thermal modification rather than
    simple paint.

    Trim, mouldings & finishing pieces

Finish off corners, transitions and window or door openings with
matching trim so the whole room feels intentional.

    • Alder and Thermo‑Alder T‑mouldings for clean wall‑to‑wall transitions.
    • Matching inside/outside corner pieces to hide cut edges and movement gaps.
    • Bench skirts and fascia boards to make benches look built‑in and solid.

    Compare Sauna Wood Types

All of the woods on this page are sauna‑safe, but they each have a slightly
different look and personality. Here’s a quick comparison to help you
    decide.

    Aspen

Very light, smooth and almost knot‑free.

    • Look & feel: Bright, clean and minimal.
    • Best uses: Indoor walls, ceilings and benches.
    • Highlights: Stays comfortable to the touch, low
resin, great for people sensitive to strong aromas.

    Alder

    Warm reddish‑brown with subtle grain.

    • Look & feel: Classic Finnish‑style warmth.
    • Best uses: Walls, benches and trim.
    • Highlights: More moisture‑resistant than many
softwoods with a gentle natural scent.

    Thermo‑Aspen

Golden‑brown, richer tone than plain aspen.

    • Look & feel: Premium, modern and knot‑poor –
      very “Nordic spa” friendly.
    • Best uses: High‑end walls, ceilings and benches.
    • Highlights: Our most popular choice for modern
saunas. Pairs beautifully with black or dark accent walls, especially
      behind the heater.

    Thermo‑Alder

Deeper brown with an upscale vibe.

    • Look & feel: Rich, refined and timeless.
    • Best uses: Premium interiors and benches.
    • Highlights: Very stable after thermal modification,
ideal where tight joints and minimal movement matter.

    Thermo‑Spruce

Golden‑brown with visible knots and lots of character.

    • Look & feel: Rustic, cozy and traditional –
      think cabin or barrel sauna.
    • Best uses: Outdoor/barrel saunas, walls, benches and
      floors.
    • Highlights: Our most affordable thermally modified
sauna wood. A great choice if you like knots and a more rustic look,
      without sacrificing stability and durability.

    Thermo‑Magnolia

    Rich brown with elegant grain.

    • Look & feel: Darker, luxurious and bold.
    • Best uses: Statement walls, ceilings and premium
      benches.
    • Highlights: Luxury look and feel when you want the
sauna interior to be the main design feature.

    Black Thermo‑Spruce & Black Alder

    Dark charcoal to true black.

    • Look & feel: Dramatic, modern or “smoke sauna”
      inspired.
    • Best uses: Accent walls or full dark interiors with
      light benches for contrast.
    • Highlights: Factory‑finished with sauna‑safe
coatings over thermally modified wood for long‑lasting color.

Sauna Marketplace pick for a budget‑friendly sauna without
    compromise:

Thermo‑Spruce on the walls and ceiling with Thermo‑Aspen benches and
backrests. You get the value and rustic character of Thermo‑Spruce where
it shows, and the smooth, modern feel of Thermo‑Aspen everywhere your skin
    touches the wood.

Want a modern Nordic spa look?
Go with Thermo‑Aspen on the walls and benches, then add a black accent wall
behind the heater or on one end of the room using black Thermo‑Spruce or
    Black Alder.

How to Choose Sauna Wood in 5 Steps

    1. Decide indoor vs outdoor use.
Outdoor and barrel saunas need wood that handles weather and big swings
in humidity. Thermo‑Spruce and other thermally modified woods are usually
      the best choice here.
    2. Separate walls/ceiling from benches & floor.
Benches touch skin, so prioritize comfort and low resin (Aspen, Alder and
Thermo‑Spruce bench profiles) while walls and ceilings can be a bit more
rustic if you like that look. A very popular layout is Thermo‑Spruce on
the walls and ceiling with Thermo‑Aspen benches.
    3. Pick a light, medium or dark aesthetic.
Aspen and Alder give a bright Scandinavian feel, Thermo‑Aspen is our most
popular modern option, Thermo‑Spruce leans rustic with knots, and black
sauna wood creates a dramatic, moody space.
    4. Set a budget per square foot.
Wall and ceiling cladding usually take the most footage, while benches
use fewer, thicker boards. Use the price per board or per linear foot on
each product to balance cost and look.
    5. Ask for help when in doubt.
If you’re not sure how much wood you need or which profile is right,
reach out by chat, phone or email and we’ll help you plan cuts, lengths
      and mixing woods.

    Sauna Wood FAQ

Tap or click each question below to reveal the answer.

What is the best wood for sauna walls?

For most home saunas we recommend Thermo‑Aspen, Thermo‑Alder, Aspen or
Thermo‑Spruce. All of them are proven in high‑heat, high‑humidity
environments and offer a cleaner, more stable result than standard
construction pine. Your choice comes down to budget and whether you want
a light, warm or dark interior.

What is the best wood for sauna benches?

Bench wood should be smooth, low‑resin and comfortable against skin.
Aspen, Alder and Thermo‑Spruce bench profiles are all excellent options.
Avoid pressure‑treated lumber or interior paneling that was never
designed to run at sauna temperatures.

Can I mix different sauna woods in one room?

Yes. Many of the nicest saunas use a mix – for example, Thermo‑Spruce
walls with light Aspen benches, or dark Thermo‑Alder walls with matching
    benches and black accent walls.

Our go‑to “no‑compromise on performance” budget combo is Thermo‑Spruce on
the walls and ceiling with Thermo‑Aspen benches and backrests. For a
modern Nordic look, run Thermo‑Aspen on the walls and benches and use a
black Thermo‑Spruce or Black Alder accent wall behind the heater.

Do I need to seal or treat the wood?

The short answer for most home saunas is: no, treatment is not
    required.
In Finland it’s common for home saunas to be left
completely unfinished, with bathers sitting on towels and simply cleaning
the wood as needed so it can breathe and dry quickly.

For detailed recommendations, see the care guide in the
attachments section on each individual wood page. There you’ll find
species‑specific tips for cleaning and optional protection.

For commercial saunas, rental spaces, or if you want to keep your sauna
looking new as long as possible, we recommend
paraffin oil or sauna wax along with
sauna‑safe cleaners. You’ll find them in our accessories
section. They ship for free for life with Sauna
Marketplace heater orders – even when you reorder later.

Standard stains, polyurethane and exterior sealers are not recommended
inside a hot sauna. Always check the product label or ask us before
    applying any finish.

How much sauna wood do I need for a typical home sauna?

As a rough rule of thumb, a 6×8 ft indoor sauna usually needs
enough cladding for all four walls plus the ceiling, plus bench boards
for 2–3 tiers of benches. Exact quantities depend on your layout,
    ceiling height and board profile.

The easiest way to avoid over‑ or under‑ordering is to send us a sketch
or measurements. We can help you build a simple cut list and recommend
    lengths that minimize waste.

    Why don’t you sell cedar?

We love a good cedar sauna, but we don’t sell Western red cedar boards
    online for a few reasons.

    • Quality is hard to guarantee at a distance.
It’s almost impossible to source cedar in the consistent, high quality
we expect when we’re shipping it across the country. You’re usually
better off finding cedar locally where you can see the boards in
      person.
    • Our thermally modified woods perform better.
Once people experience thermally modified aspen, alder and spruce, they
almost never go back to cedar. Thermo woods are extremely stable, so
they don’t develop the same gaps and cracks you often see in Western
      red cedar over time.
    • Durability and rot resistance.
Properly thermally modified sauna woods are more resistant to rot and
decay than even old‑growth cedar, especially in demanding, wet or
      heavily used environments.
    • Sensitivity and dust.
Many people are allergic or sensitive to Western red cedar. Among folks
who work with WRC every day—loggers, mill workers, carpenters, etc.—
studies suggest roughly 5–10 % develop
sensitization or asthma related to WRC dust.

So if your heart is set on cedar, we genuinely think you’re best served
by sourcing it locally. If you’re open to alternatives, our thermally
modified sauna woods usually win people over for good.

What’s the closest sauna wood in tone to Western red cedar?

If you love the look of Western red cedar, we have two great analogs:

    • Thermo‑Spruce is closest to a knotty, rustic Western
red cedar board. It has a warm, reddish‑brown tone with visible knots
      and a cozy, traditional feel.
    • Thermo‑Aspen is more like a clear, Grade‑A WRC with a
smoother, more uniform appearance and very few knots.

Both options give you that warm cedar‑style tone with the added stability
and durability of thermally modified wood.

How long does it take to ship?

Unless there’s a special stock note when you add a sauna wood product to
your cart, that wood is in stock in the US. In most
cases we expect delivery to occur within 10–14 days of
    your order.

Heavier orders and remote locations can take a bit longer, but if timing
is critical for your project, reach out before you order and we can
    confirm current lead times.

Need Help Planning Your Sauna Wood?

If you’re unsure which combination of woods to use or how much to order,
send us your rough dimensions, a sketch or even just a photo of your
space. We help DIY builders and professional installers every day and can
suggest profiles, spacing and layouts that fit your budget and style.

You can always contact us with questions and we’ll
help you choose the right mix of Thermo‑Spruce, Thermo‑Aspen and other
    woods for your sauna.
