    Choosing a sauna kit

    • Kit or prebuilt: a kit arrives in a crate and goes up on your base. A prebuilt sauna arrives in one piece and usually needs a forklift or crane to set it down.
    • Outdoors, look for thermally modified wood, a real roof, drip edges and a base that drains. Untreated wood moves until gaps open and the heater works harder.
    • Most kit prices are Before Heater Package. You choose the heater on the product page, sized to the room; a glass front takes more kW than a wood one.
    • Build time: two capable people put up a small barrel or cube kit in about a weekend. Glass fronts and larger kits take longer.

Sauna kit questions

What is a sauna kit?

A sauna kit is the sauna in parts: wall and roof sections, benches, door and hardware, crated and shipped by freight to your curb. You or a builder put it together on a level base. Most kits leave the heater as a separate choice so it can be sized to the room.

Does a sauna kit include the heater?

Usually not, and that works in your favor. The right heater depends on whether you want the hottest heat, the most even heat or the simplest one to run. Each product page lists exactly what ships and the heaters that fit.

How long does it take to build a sauna kit?

Plan on a weekend with two capable people for a small barrel or cube. Glass-front models and first builds take longer, and the larger kits are real construction projects. Our SaunaLife CL5G build video shows a full assembly.

What base does a sauna kit need?

A flat, level, well-draining base: a concrete pad, pavers or compacted gravel. Keeping the bottom of the sauna off wet ground is what makes it last.

Do I need an electrician?

For an electric heater, yes. Electric sauna heaters need a dedicated 240 V circuit, and we send the spec sheet so your electrician has the numbers before the kit arrives. A wood-fired kit needs a chimney and the clearances in the stove manual instead.

Which wood should an outdoor sauna kit be made of?

Thermally modified spruce or aspen. Untreated wood expands and contracts until gaps and cracks open, heat escapes and the heater has to work harder. The kit also needs a real roof, drip edges, drains, vents and a level base that moves water away.

Single layer or insulated?

Outdoors, a single layer of thermally modified wood with a real roof and drainage is the standard, and it is what the cubes and barrels here use. Indoors we only recommend insulated, panelized kits with a vapor and radiant barrier, so hot, humid air stays out of the framing. See the indoor sauna kits.
