Wide plank for the comfort. Thermo-aspen for the climate.
This is 2×6 SHP bench stock, surfaced on all four sides with eased edges so there’s nothing sharp where you sit, milled 1.1 inches thick. Frame your bench with standard 2x4s and deck it with these boards, run horizontal or vertical. The wide face means fewer seams and a cleaner look across a long bench or a backrest.
Why aspen, and why thermally modified
Aspen is the Scandinavian default for bench wood for a reason: no resin, no splinters, and it stays cooler against bare skin than the darker woods. The thermal modification is the part that matters for the long haul. Plain aspen is run through extreme heat and steam, no chemicals ever, which changes the wood at a cellular level so it can’t hold moisture and won’t expand and contract. The color runs all the way through, so a cut end keeps the same golden-brown tone. Same insulating feel as cedar, holds up far longer.
One honest note: every sauna wood is soft and will scratch, and thermal modification doesn’t change that. The upside is you can sand it down and refinish it years from now without hurting a thing.
