Thermory Saunas & Sauna Wood

Thermory, from Estonia

Our friends at Thermory make the wood. You get a sauna that lasts.

Your sauna goes from a cold night to 190°F and back, again and again. Thermory wood is made for exactly that. It is thermally modified with nothing but heat and steam, in kilns run to an exact schedule, so it barely moves. The tongue and groove that closes tight on day one stays tight years later. We have walked Thermory’s plants in Estonia, Ben Burger sided his own house in Thermory, and Ben Frizzell owns the first Thermory Square sent to North America.

Three days in Estonia with our friends at Thermory

Thermory invited partners from 23 countries to Tallinn for its first Partner Alliance Summit. We sat through the seminars, played in the golf day, and walked five Thermory sites around Estonia. Here is what matters to you, the person who will sit on the wood.

  • The world’s largest sauna-materials plantThat is how Thermory describes Reola. It turns out about 2.6 million linear feet of profiled boards a month, roughly 3,000 saunas’ worth, mostly alder and aspen.
  • Wood, water, steam and heatNo chemicals go in. Our host at Reola put the whole process in one line: “There is no chemicals in the system, there is only wood, water, steam and heat.”

Only the best boards make it through

Thermory doesn’t spot-check its wood. It filters it. Boards are checked at several points on the way through the plant, and the ones that don’t meet Thermory’s standard are pulled out, so only the best boards start the process and only the best finish it.

  1. X-rayed before anything elseAt Reola’s pre-sorting line, a Microtec Goldeneye 500 X-rays and 3D-scans every board, checking its moisture and curvature. Boards that don’t make the grade are sorted out before they are ever modified.
  2. Modified to an exact scheduleOnly the boards that pass go into the kilns, where each species and each level of modification follows its own temperature, steam and time schedule.
  3. Scanned again after profilingThe profiling line checks the finished boards with eight 3D cameras and a dimensional control system, so the tongue, the groove and the width come out right.
  4. Proven in the weatherAt Loo, sample boards hang outside for years with dated brass plaques. Our host put it simply: “We would like to see what fails, what is not failing. So we sell those things which are not failing.”

The kilns

This is where Thermory’s wood becomes Thermory wood: the kiln hall at Loo, with its giant steel kilns. Each load follows an exact schedule. The wood is taken to zero moisture over 35 to 46 hours, brought to a precise target temperature under steam (374°F for a medium modification, 419°F or more for intense), then cooled and brought back to a stable moisture level.

Sensors sit two to three inches inside each stack of timber, reading its moisture and temperature, and the kiln adjusts to what they report. Every species and every level of modification has its own schedule, refined over decades. That precision, load after load, is why the wood holds its shape in a room that swings from winter cold to sauna heat.

“These are 25 years old. So if you see, we haven’t done nothing with them… if you move the board it’s still brand new.”Our host at Thermory’s Loo plant, lifting a board of thermally modified ash decking. Our video, September 7, 2026.

These boards were from Thermory’s early days, found lying on the ground after about 20 years. They were still solid and usable. Sand them down and they’d look great.

The first Thermory Square in North America

Ben Frizzell owns the first Thermory Square sent to North America, at his place near Bend, Oregon. He built it almost by himself, on camera, in April 2024. It has been our test bench ever since, mostly for heaters. We even hung a wall heater in it to see what would happen: the Square’s wall curves into the floor, so the heater had to sit too high to warm the lower bench. If you can do it in a sauna kit, we’ve probably tried it in there.

Very easy for 1 or 2 people to put together, and it took 1 day to complete… The size of the benches and ceiling height are perfect for someone 6+ ft, and we love the front porch.Ben Frizzell, on his Square, 2024

Ben Burger sided his house in untreated Thermory Kodiak, the wide-plank thermo-spruce that also clads the outside of Thermory’s Luik cabin. No stain, no sealer. His words that summer: “It’s too fancy for us so we’re going to let it gray, completely untreated.” The first photo is the week it went up in 2024; the second is a year of weather later.

What to know before you buy Thermory

  • It costs more than raw lumberEven Thermo-Spruce, the least expensive Thermory board, starts at $2.50 a foot. You are paying for wood that stays put in a room that swings from cold to 190°F.
  • Outside, it turns silverUnfinished thermowood weathers to a soft silver-gray, and Thermory’s own sample wall shows exactly how. To keep the brown, plan on a breathable UV finish.
  • Inside, treat it once a yearThe wood doesn’t need a sealer to last, but Thermory’s care guide asks for a sauna-safe treatment at least once a year, and its warranty expects you to follow the guide.
  • 194°F is the ceilingThermory’s barrel and Square manuals cap the room at 194°F. Size the heater to get there comfortably, not to push past it.
  • Medium alder stays indoorsThermo-Alder is an indoor board. For something darker that can take the weather, choose an intense modification.
  • You pick the heaterYou choose the heater package with your Thermory sauna, and it ships on its own. We size it with you.
  • Plan a day or a weekendWith two people and a level base, a barrel or Square goes up in a full day to a weekend. Have a helper and a rubber mallet.
On camera

Watch us build Thermory saunas

Ben Frizzell built both of these on camera: his Square in April 2024 and a No 60 barrel that summer. He learned most of these the hard way, so you don’t have to.

  • Short screws on the window sideOn a barrel with the panoramic rear window, the short S3 screws go on the glass side and the S2s everywhere else. Mix them up and a screw can crack the glass. His rule: long screw door side, short screw window side.
  • Check the pad with a staveOurs went on compacted gravel with leveled 12 x 12 inch pavers. Lay a stave across the pavers both ways, and fix any gap you see before the cradles go down.
  • Square the cradlesMeasure corner to corner. When the two diagonals match, the base is square.
  • Bench supports: 2 to 2½ inches, not 3That is the gap between the curved wall and the side supports. He set his at 3 and had to go back and fix it.
  • Gloves for the steel bandsThe edges are sharp. Keep the bands on the bottom third, where they stay out of sight, and snug them down tight.
  • Bring a rubber malletIt is the best tool in the build for closing the gaps between staves. A right-angle drill attachment, about $15, earns its keep on the trim and under the benches.

Questions

Thermory questions, answered

Real questions customers have asked us about Thermory wood and saunas, answered by Ben Burger and Ben Frizzell. Updated .

About Thermory wood

What is Thermory?

Thermory is an Estonian company that makes thermally modified wood, sauna materials and sauna kits, and it describes itself as the world’s largest producer of thermally modified wood and sauna materials. For saunas it makes wall paneling, bench boards, trim, doors and outdoor kits like the barrels, the Sauna Squares and the Luik. It also owns Auroom, which builds indoor and outdoor sauna rooms with Thermory wood.

Where is Thermory wood made?

Thermory wood is made in Estonia. Sauna boards, benches and doors come from Thermory’s Reola plant, which Thermory calls the world’s largest producer of sauna materials, and exterior cladding and decking come from its Loo plant. We walked both in September 2026.

What does thermally modified wood mean?

Thermally modified wood has been changed by heat and steam, not chemicals, so it swells and shrinks far less with humidity. Thermory runs it as a precisely controlled process in large kilns: the wood is dried to zero moisture over 35 to 46 hours, brought to an exact temperature under steam (374°F for medium modification, 419°F or more for intense), then cooled and brought back to a stable moisture level. The color goes all the way through.

Is Thermory wood treated with chemicals?

No. Thermory modifies its wood with heat and steam only. Nothing is sprayed on or pressed in, and the brown color is the wood itself, not a stain.

How does Thermory check the quality of its wood?

Thermory checks its boards at several points and pulls the ones that miss its standard. At the Reola plant a Microtec Goldeneye 500 X-rays and 3D-scans every board for moisture and curvature before it is modified, and after profiling a second line checks the boards with eight 3D cameras and a dimensional control system. Products are also tested outdoors for years at the Loo plant before they are sold.

Does Thermory wood smell?

New Thermory wood has a mild, toasty scent, not a burnt one, and it is much quieter than cedar. The scent fades with use, faster if you heat the sauna often. If scent matters to you, order a free sample and smell it first.

Choosing your wood

What is the best Thermory wood for a sauna?

For most saunas we recommend Thermo-Aspen: it is smooth, has very few knots and gives a clean, modern room. Thermo-Spruce is the rustic, knotty look at a lower price per foot, and alder has a fine, even grain that many people love for benches. A popular budget mix is Thermo-Spruce on the walls and ceiling with Thermo-Aspen benches. Order free samples of two or three and look at them in your own light.

Is Thermory better than cedar for a sauna?

For the walls and benches of a sauna, we recommend thermally modified wood like Thermory over cedar. It barely moves with heat and humidity, so the joints stay tight over years of heating and cooling. Traditional Finnish saunas also favor quieter-smelling woods like spruce, aspen and alder, so the room smells of the steam and whatever you add to the water rather than the wood.

Does Thermo-Spruce have knots?

Yes. Thermo-Spruce has tight knots, and that is its rustic character and part of why it costs less. If you want a clean, knot-free wall, choose Thermo-Aspen or Thermo-Magnolia instead.

What is the difference between alder, Thermo-Alder and Dark Thermo-Alder?

They are the same species at three levels of Thermory’s process. Natural alder is not modified and is the lightest. Thermo-Alder gets a medium modification that peaks at 374°F and turns a warm medium brown; it is for indoor use. Dark Thermo-Alder gets an intense modification at 419°F or more and is the deepest brown. Samples side by side settle it quickly.

Can I use black wood inside a sauna?

Yes, if it is finished for the hot room. For a black interior, use a board finished black for sauna use, like our brushed and waxed black Thermo-Spruce. Thermory’s painted and embossed black boards are exterior cladding, not sauna paneling. The Thermory Ignite barrel is black on the outside and natural wood inside.

What is the best Thermory wood for sauna benches?

For benches we recommend 5/4 SHP bench boards in Thermo-Aspen or Thermo-Alder. The thicker 5/4 board is stiffer than a 1x4, needs fewer supports and can be sanded back to new after years of use. Thermo-Spruce 5/4 is the budget bench and floor board, and Thermo-Magnolia comes as an extra-wide bench board.

Installing and caring for it

Do I need to seal Thermory wood inside a sauna?

Thermory sauna wood doesn’t need a sealer to hold up, but Thermory’s care guide does ask you to treat it. The guide calls for a sauna-safe product on the wood at least once a year, more often if you heat the sauna a lot, and the warranty expects you to follow it. Paraffin oil on the benches and sauna wax on the walls are the usual picks, and a towel on the bench does the rest. Never use regular stain or paint inside the hot room.

Should I treat the outside of a Thermory sauna?

You don’t have to. Unfinished Thermory wood holds up outdoors and weathers to a soft silver-gray in the sun, which you can see on Thermory’s own weathering wall. To keep the brown color, apply a breathable exterior oil with UV protection within about a week of assembly and renew it every year.

Should Thermory paneling run vertically or horizontally?

Either works. Thermory’s installation guide covers both. Leave an air gap behind the paneling by fastening it to furring strips that run perpendicular to the boards, over the foil vapor barrier. When the boards run horizontally, the tongue points up.

What fasteners should I use for Thermory paneling?

Use stainless steel fasteners only. Thermory’s installation guide calls for stainless staples driven through the groove side, so each fastener is hidden by the next board.

How much Thermory wood do I need?

Work from face coverage, not nominal size: a 1x4 STS4 board covers about 3.1 inches of wall once the tongue locks, a 1x5 about 4.3 inches, and wide Thermo-Magnolia 5.4 to 6.4 inches. Paneling comes in bundles of six boards of one length (bench boards in fours), and lengths are metric conversions, so a 5.9 ft board is 70.8 inches. Round up to the next length. Send us your room size and we’ll check the count with you, or lay the room out in SaunaDesignPro, our free 3D sauna design tool.

Thermory saunas

Should I get a Thermory barrel sauna or a Sauna Square?

Choose the barrel for a compact, traditional sauna and the Sauna Square for more room. The barrel’s round shape keeps the space tight around you. The Square has an L-shaped bench on two levels, a porch and a big glass front, and comes in medium and large sizes for couples, families or groups. Plan how a large Square will be unloaded on delivery day.

What should I set a Thermory sauna on?

Set a Thermory sauna on a firm, level base that keeps it up off the ground: concrete, pavers or compacted crushed stone. Thermory’s warranty doesn’t cover a sauna set directly on gravel, grass or mud, and a base that isn’t level can keep the door from closing properly. We built our No 60 barrel on compacted gravel with leveled 12 x 12 inch pavers, then checked for gaps with a stave both ways.

What heater should I use in a Thermory sauna?

You choose the heater with your Thermory sauna when you order it here, sized to the model, and it ships separately. In the barrels we most often pair a Harvia KIP, HUUM DROP or HUUM HIVE. In the Sauna Squares, the HUUM HIVE Mini gives the most top heat, a Harvia Virta keeps it simple, and a Saunum Air Perfect gives the most even heat and fits if you trim the floor grid. Skip a heater that hangs on the wall of a Square: the wall curves into the floor, so it sits too high to warm the lower bench. We tested one in Ben Frizzell’s. Glass counts as extra volume, so tell us your model and we’ll size the heater and the circuit.

How hot can a Thermory sauna get?

Thermory’s manuals for its barrels and Squares set the maximum room temperature at 194°F and warn that going higher can overheat the sauna. We size the heater so you get there comfortably, not so it can push past the cap.

Is a Thermory barrel sauna insulated?

No. A Thermory barrel is solid thermally modified wood with no insulation layer: 1.65-inch staves and tempered glass. A solid back wall holds heat better than the panoramic window, and we count the glass when we size the heater.

Does a Thermory barrel sauna need a roof?

Thermory barrels ship with a fitted rain jacket, and Thermory designs it to stay on all year: it sheds water and keeps condensation from dripping inside. Some owners later add asphalt shingles or a metal roof with a drip edge to match the house. Clear heavy snow off the roof without tearing the jacket.

How long does a Thermory sauna take to build?

A Thermory barrel or Square takes two people a full day to a weekend on a level base. Ben Frizzell built his Square in about a day, and our No 60 barrel mostly on his own over three days, a few hours at a time; with two people he figures six to eight hours. The build videos above walk through every step.

Can I use a Thermory sauna as a rental or Airbnb?

A Thermory sauna can go in a rental, but check the warranty first. Thermory’s current sauna warranty excludes public and rental saunas unless Thermory agrees in advance, so tell us before you order and we’ll ask them for you.

What warranty comes with a Thermory sauna?

Thermory’s current sauna warranty (2024) covers the first buyer for two years against defects in construction, manufacturing and materials, and against rot on the outside that makes the sauna unusable. It expects you to follow Thermory’s installation and care instructions, and it doesn’t cover a sauna set directly on gravel, grass or mud, or a public or rental sauna unless Thermory agrees in advance. Heaters, lights, electrical parts and glass fall under their own makers. Read Thermory’s sauna warranty.

Buying from us

Is Thermory in stock, and where does it ship from?

We check stock in real time across Thermory’s three US warehouses, in New York, Texas and Colorado, for every kit and for sauna wood down to the length of each board. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll confirm what’s on the shelf, which warehouse it ships from and when it should reach you. The heater usually ships separately.

How does Thermory wood ship?

Shorter boards can often ship by parcel, which is gentler and costs less, while longer boards and saunas go by truck freight. We quote shipping to your address before you order, and we size board lengths so ends that take a knock in transit can be trimmed.

Can I get free samples of Thermory wood?

Yes. Every Thermory wall and bench board on this page has a free sample option: pick the per-foot option on the product page, or ask us and we’ll send a few species. Color varies a little from lot to lot, so treat a sample as a guide rather than an exact match.

Is Sauna Marketplace a Thermory dealer?

Yes. Thermory lists Sauna Marketplace on its own sauna dealer page.

Ben Burger and Ben Frizzell, the founders of Sauna MarketplaceYou’ve done the research. Now you need someone who’s done the build. Book a free 30-minute call with Ben Burger or Ben Frizzell, whichever is free first. Bring your ideas and measurements. We’ll send the wood samples.

A Good Friend

You get the heater sized to your room, the spec diagram before your electrician shows up, freight sorted out, and someone to call long after the delivery.

Above and beyond is the job. Ben Frizzell once pulled the benches out of his own brand-new sauna and shipped them to a customer who was up against a deadline.
