How the Air L evens out the heat
In most saunas the hottest air collects at the ceiling while the floor stays cool. The Air L’s upper intake draws in that hot air, its fan mixes it with cooler, fresher air from floor level, and the blend comes back out low in the room. Saunum’s own measurements show the blending closes about two thirds of the head-to-toe temperature gap.
The fan has three speeds, set from the AirIQ control, so you can run a gentle blend or a stronger one.
Stones and steam
The open stainless basket holds 190 lb of stones. A big stone load stores more heat, so the steam after each ladle is softer and lasts longer. Stack the stones so they support each other and leave room for air, and don’t force them between the heating elements.
Himalayan salt
Every Air L comes with Himalayan salt spheres that sit in the airflow. They are optional, and the heater works the same without them.

Size on the room’s effective volume. Add 3 cu. ft. for every square foot of glass, tile, brick, concrete or stone, and multiply by 1.5 for uninsulated log walls. If you land between two sizes, take the larger one. The minimum ceiling height is 73 in for every size. The room finder on our Saunum sauna heaters page does the math for you.
Installation
- 240 V single phase, with copper wire rated for at least 194 °F. Size the wire from the current US manual.
- Do not connect the heater through a GFCI breaker. The manual prohibits it.
- Open-basket clearances: 8 in at the sides and 10 in in front, with 20 in clear in front of the fan output.
- Leave 40 in from the top of the stone basket to the ceiling.
- The Air L runs only with the Saunum AirIQ control.
- Have a licensed electrician install it, following the current US manual.
Warranty and certification
Listed to UL 875 and CSA C22.2 No. 164. Two-year warranty for residential saunas. Heating elements and salt spheres are wear items and aren’t covered.
Common questions
Why choose the stainless open basket over the black version?
The open basket lets more heat radiate straight from the stones, and you can see them. The black closed basket needs less clearance (2 in at the sides and front) and holds 180 lb of stones.
Will it work with my existing sauna control?
No. The Air L runs only with the Saunum AirIQ control, which is sold separately.
What about glass walls or a log sauna?
Both need a bigger heater than the raw room volume suggests. Use the sizing rule above, or send us your room and we’ll size it with you.
