Wood stove clearances are set by radiant heat: the casing beams infrared at the nearest wall and timber absorbs it. A sheath intercepts the radiation with a steel plate and holds an air gap behind it, so convection carries the heat away instead of the wall soaking it up. Harvia’s description of this one is short: it “is designed for use with the Harvia 36 and 36 Duo wood sauna stoves” and “reduces the safety distance to combustible materials”.

What it buys you, in Harvia’s numbers

16.2 in back on each side is the largest reduction in Harvia’s sheath table; the next largest rows give back 13 in, and the rest fall between 7.9 and 11.9 in. As always you trade front clearance for side and rear, and the ceiling figure does not change.

Can the stove sit 2–3 inches from the wall with this sheath?

With the WL850 protective sheath fitted, a Harvia 36 or 36 Duo can stand 3.5 in from a side or rear wall, slightly more than three inches, against 19.7 in with no sheath. Harvia's table also asks for 27.6 in at the front and holds the ceiling clearance at 49.2 in; the sheath changes neither. The panel itself is set 1.2 in off the wall, and that gap counts inside the 3.6 in, so it has to stay clear.
