Sitting upright against a flat vertical wall flattens the natural arch of the lower back, which is why twenty minutes on a bench can start relaxing and end as a backache. The Curve is a simple answer: a slatted cedar panel bent into an S, so the lower curve fills the hollow of your back and the upper curve falls away for your shoulders.
Finnmark’s own description: the backrest is "designed to fit the natural arch in your back while allowing heat circulation from the infrared panels", and "complete lumbar support combined with proper heat circulation makes this the perfect infrared sauna backrest". Finnmark’s photography shows how that circulation works, horizontal slats spanning two curved side rails with an open gap between every slat, and the Finnmark Designs mark burned into the top slat.
Why cedar
The material claim is Finnmark’s and it is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing. The Curve is made entirely of Canadian red cedar, "the traditional choice for wood in saunas", and "this wood possesses thermal properties that allow it to remain comfortable to the touch even in an extremely hot sauna". Finnmark also lists the interior as antimicrobial Western Canadian red cedar that "protects against mold, bacteria, and fungus".
Where it goes
Installation type is floating. The package contains the backrest and nothing else, no brackets, no fasteners, and Finnmark’s own photograph shows it standing on a bench. Finnmark calls it "suitable for any sauna". That includes infrared and traditional saunas, and it is not locked to a Finnmark room. It is 15.5 in wide, 20.5 in tall and 7 lb, and the features list adds that it is "ergonomic and tall for lengthier torso".
