Most of what we ship is thermally modified, which means heat and steam and nothing else, no chemicals. A properly installed board will not shrink, warp, cup or rot in a hot wet room, and the color runs all the way through, so a cut end matches the face instead of flashing pale at every mitre.
The mistake we watch people make is ordering off the nominal width. A 1×4 STS4 board is milled 3.54 inches wide but covers 3.1 inches once the tongue seats. The 1×5 measures 4.72 and covers 4.3. Work your square footage off the coverage figure or you will finish a wall one row short, and that last row is never the one you want to be waiting on.
Behind the cladding goes the foil: 320 square feet a roll, reflecting up to 97 percent of radiant heat back into the room rather than into your framing. Tape the seams, overlapping the sheets rather than butting them, and plan two vents, a fixed grille in and an adjustable hatch out, which is what a heater warranty generally expects to see. Framing and mineral wool are yours to source locally.

Price range: $2.50 through $150.00Thermo-Spruce 1×4 by Thermory is the most affordable way to achieve beautiful thermally modified wood walls in your sauna. Popular in Finland for it’s thermal performance, Nordic Spruce is also a sustainable choice. We love the rustic look and unique, tight knots that look like wings. Thermo-Spruce gives a pleasant, mild aroma with far lower VOC content than Western Red Cedar. Natural thermal modification changes the wood at a cellular level to resist rot, decay, warping, and cupping.

This is Western Red Cedar 2×4 VG S4SEE: 1.5″ thick, 3.5″ wide, knot-free vertical grain, surfaced and eased, milled in Canada. It’s the bench board for the builder who wants the full cedar package done at a quality level that won’t embarrass the rest of the build. The aroma is the real thing, the grain is clean, and the 1.5″ thickness gives the bench a visual weight that thinner boards don’t. Honest note: at roughly 3x the cost of thermo-aspen, this is a high-cost choice, and thermo wood holds its joints tighter over the years. But if clear cedar 2×4 bench stock is what you’re after, this is it. Sold by the linear foot.
