Hukka Design has been carving North Karelian soapstone into sauna accessories in Tuupovaara, eastern Finland, since 1986, and the company turned 40 this year. The material is the whole idea. Soapstone holds heat, so a Hukka diffuser sits directly among the stones in your heater, soaks up that heat, and hands your water back as a softer, more consistent steam. About 70 percent of production is exported.

We carry seven Hukka pieces and have shipped 194 units of them to buyers in at least 20 states. The Sauna Elf Collection moves fastest at 102 units across 64 buyers, and it rarely goes out alone, since six of those orders also took the Hukka massage stones. Where do Hukka soapstone pieces go in the sauna?

The diffusers go into the heater, down among the stones, not on a bench or a wall. That covers all nine in the Hukka Sauna Fountain and Defuser Collection. The Saunaheppu installs the same way, wedged between the stones and tilted slightly backwards, running on the temperature difference, so the hotter the stone and colder the water, the faster he bounces.

How much water does a Hukka Höyrykivet steam stone hold?

Each carved Carelian soapstone reservoir takes 0.8 dl of water, about a third of a cup, and the set gives you almost two thirds of a cup to steam off slowly instead of all at once. That is the whole reason the reservoir is carved. The Höyrykivet part number is 11053.

How many elves are in the Sauna Elf Collection, and how many diffusers in the fountain collection?

Six soapstone elves and nine diffusers and water steam generators. The elves are named Lyyli, Reiska, Elli, Tahvo, Sulo and Jolle, and you choose the one you want. Between the two collections we have shipped 134 units, 102 of the elves and 32 of the diffusers, which makes them the two best selling Hukka items we stock.

What do the Finnish names on Hukka products mean?

Four of the seven we carry keep their Finnish names. Makkaraputki is the soapstone sausage tube, part number 11020. Höyrykivet is steam stones, 11053. Pisarainen is the droplet shaped thermometer in soapstone and steel, 11010-F. Saunaheppu is the comic guy who pops out of his nook. Saunakko is an aromatic cup for the heater, Saunajoy a massage stone with a handle.
