    The four-part starting kit

    Ask what a new sauna owner actually needs on day one and the honest list is short: something to carry water, something to pour it, and a way to see what the room is doing. This set is exactly that, in one finish, from one maker.

    The bucket

    1 gallon, spruce, banded in wood with a plastic tub insert. The insert is the detail worth paying attention to: an all-wood bucket has to stay damp to stay tight, and a sauna that goes unused for a couple of weeks is how those start to weep. 10.25 inches in diameter, 6.75 inches tall, 2.7 pounds.

    The ladle

    Hand carved from birch, 12 inches long, with a spoon cup shaped for controlled pouring rather than a fast dump. It has a leather hanging loop, which is a small thing that solves the biggest cause of ruined ladles: being left to sit in the water.

    The gauges

    A round black thermometer and a matching hygrometer for the wall. The thermometer reads 70 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit, the hygrometer 0 to 100 percent. Two dials rather than one combined unit, which lets you place them at the height that matters to you.

    Why humidity is on the wall at all

    Temperature alone does not describe a sauna. The same 180 degrees feels completely different at 10 percent humidity and at 30, and the second one is what most people are chasing when they say a sauna felt good. Watching both numbers for a few weeks teaches you your own room faster than any advice will.
