Reach first
A sauna ladle has two jobs: carry water to the stones and keep your hand out of the steam that comes back off them. Length does the second job. At 17 in this ladle runs a couple of inches past our 14.5 in birch ladles, and that extra reach counts most when the heater is set back from the bench, sits in a corner, or wears a guard rail you have to pour over.
The bowl
The reservoir is deep and bowl-shaped, 6 in across, made for splashing water onto the rocks rather than dribbling it. If your heater’s manual sets a limit on how much water goes on in one throw, fill the bowl only that far. The handle is smooth and elongated for a comfortable grip, and the spruce is hand-stained to accentuate its natural grain, so each ladle looks a little different.
Use it with
The ladle is sold on its own and suits any bucket. If you need one, the ProSaunas lined wood sauna bucket holds 1.1 gal and comes in spruce, alder or thermo-aspen.
