A 5.8 gal stainless water heater that sits on top of a wood stove with the smoke pipe running through it. What’s included

  • WP220ST water pipe (tank)

The WP220ST is a pipe-model water heater: it sits on top of the stove and the smoke pipe runs up through the middle of the tank. In Harvia’s words, “the water heats up quickly, as the smoke pipe runs through the tank and acts as a wall inside it”. Harvia’s water heaters are made of high-quality stainless steel, and the pipe model holds 5.8 gal.

Two rules from the manual that decide whether it lasts

  • Keep as much water as possible in it during heating and use. Harvia’s manual: “The welded joints of an empty heater may crack due to the heat of the stove and the walls of the heater may bend.”
  • Use salt-free household water within Harvia’s limits: humus under 12 mg/litre, iron under 0.2 mg/litre, calcium under 100 mg/litre, manganese 0.05 mg/litre. Harvia’s own explanation: “High iron concentration corrodes the heater material, while limy water turns shiny surfaces a dull gray. Good-quality lake water can also be used in water heaters. It will not damage the heater materials as long as the heater is cleaned thoroughly every now and then.”

Handle the water as boiling water

The manual is blunt about this: water heaters mounted on a wood-burning stove always heat the water to boiling point (+212 °F), and the water usually starts to boil when the stove is heated. To prevent boiling, remove some of the warm water and replace it with cool water. When you are making wash water, mix small amounts of hot water into cold water rather than the other way round.

Fitting it

Harvia’s pipe-model sequence is three steps. Attach the faucet, with the gasket between the faucet and the outer surface and the lock nut inside, then check the direction of the faucet. Remove the 4.5 in blocking plug from the top of the stove toward the back of the stone chamber and use it to cover the smoke outlet at the back of the stove, turning the fastening spring so the plug sits tight. Then lift the heater on so the filling hole faces upward and the smoke outlet through the tank fits the cone on top of the stove tightly.

Off-season

Freezing water expands and can damage both heater and faucet. Empty the tank through the faucet and leave the faucet open. Clean the tank with water and a soft cloth, no strong detergents, and take any rust spots off with 400 grit or rougher wet sandpaper rather than steel wool.

PLAN THE WHOLE SAUNA

The room and heater still have to work as one system.

Start with the room dimensions, then account for glass, masonry, insulation, ceiling height, required clearances, and available electrical service. That is how we move from a product that looks right to a sauna that heats evenly and comfortably.
