There is a practical reason sand timers persist in saunas long after clocks got cheap. Electronics and 190 degree steam do not coexist, a phone left on the bench is a ruined phone, and a wall clock inside the hot room fogs up and eventually dies. Sand does not care. Flip it and it works, this year and in ten years.
Fifteen is the number for a reason
Most people’s first sauna round lands somewhere between ten and twenty minutes, and fifteen is the middle of that. Long enough to properly heat through, short enough that you leave wanting the second round rather than staggering out of the first. Use it as a marker, not a rule: the timer is there so you notice time passing, not so you have to sit until the sand runs out.
