The WP250LD does two things a plain tank cannot. The smoke pipe passes through the tank and functions as a wall of it, so flue gas heats 6.6 gal of wash water on its way to the chimney. And the front of the tank carries a stone space: Harvia’s manual says to “pile sauna stones (about 33.1 lb) to the stone space of the waterheater”, with stones 2–4 in in diameter and “solely angular split-face sauna stones that are intended for use in a heater”. Harvia names peridotite, olivine-dolerite and olivine as suitable, and asks you to wash the dust off before piling them.
Harvia is precise about what those stones do: “Stones in the water heater stone space do not heat up as hot as stones in the heater. Throw water on them and you can enjoy a softer sauna experience.”
Numbers worth knowing before you plan the room
- Uncovered smoke pipe: minimum safety distance 19.7 in.
- Using the black radiation protection H=15 that comes with the package: 9.9 in.
- Smoke outlet 4.6 in; overall height 35.9 in.
- Water capacity 6.6 gal, filled with salt-free household water, step 12 of the manual: “Fill water heater with water. Best way is to use a hose or a watering can. Water capacity is 6.6 gal.”
- Water reaches boiling. The manual’s instruction is direct: do not let a person who does not understand the danger use the faucet. The faucet and hose heat up too.
- Water quality limits: humus under 12 mg/l, iron under 0.2 mg/l, calcium under 100 mg/l, manganese 0.05 mg/l.
The faucet
Harvia gives three ways to mount it: to a wooden wall with the wall mounting clamp, under a wooden part with the faucet fastener, or through a sauna wall or bench into an adjacent room, drill a 1 in hole through wood up to 1.2 in thick, push the faucet through, then measure the hose and cut it to length. Harvia asks you to fix the hot water warning mark somewhere visible. It is described as the “new tap solution, tap can be fixed to a wall or bench”.

Common questions
Does the WP250LD come with sauna stones, or do I order those separately?
Sauna stones are not included with the Harvia WP250LD and are ordered separately, Harvia's own product description ends “Sauna stones sold separately.” The stone space on the front of the tank takes about 33 lb of stones 2–4 in in diameter, and Harvia's manual asks for “solely angular split-face sauna stones that are intended for use in a heater”, naming peridotite, olivine-dolerite and olivine as suitable types. Wash the dust off before piling them, pile them so they cannot fall off the sides, and do not collect stones from nature.
