Scents and Oils
Two different products get called sauna oil, and telling them apart is most of the job on this page.
Paraffin oil is a wood treatment, not a scent. It goes on the benches and backrests, and Harvia recommends it to reduce how much moisture and dirt the wood absorbs, which is what puts off the day you have to sand everything back. Harvia’s is the one most people start with, and SaunaLife makes an odorless version that does the same job. Neither is an aroma product, and neither belongs in your water bucket.
Aroma is the other half, and that one does go in the water. The Sauna In Nature blend is eucalyptus, cedarwood, laurel and black spruce, with the eucalyptus there to open your airways. Auroom’s set gives you five to work through: eucalyptus, juniper, pine, orange and lemon. Saunum’s kit is different again, holding the oil in a reservoir on the Saunum device rather than in the löyly water.
The Wood Sauna Cleaner is the one people forget. It ships as a ready-to-use spray plus a gallon of concentrate, and it is what keeps a bench looking like wood instead of looking used.
