These are a finish layer, and Harvia says so plainly: the AC4000 stones are “only to be used as a top layer above traditional stones, with a one box maximum per heater. For decorative use only!” Be careful with them because they are “not as durable as traditional sauna stones, handle with care and pile loosely”, and they should be washed before use.
So the working stones go in first, to the weight Harvia specifies for your heater, and one box of these finishes the visible course. That is the whole job. They can be used with all Harvia heater models, and they are supplied with a Harvia heater purchase.
What the geologists found
Harvia’s certificate reproduces a Geological Survey of Finland assessment of the stone, sample code VALTU. The structure is unidirectional with a grain size of 0.01–0.06 in averaging 0.04 in; XRF puts “the composition of the stone” at “90% dolomite and 10% calcite”, and “the color of the stone is pure white”. No hazardous fibrous structures were detected. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health measured asbestos at under 0.01 weight-%, and the stone contains “neither asbestos, or sulfide minerals”. The assessment’s own conclusion is that it is fairly pure dolomite marble containing no harmful minerals, so it can be used as a sauna stone.

Do sauna stones come with the heater, or do I need to add them?
Harvia sauna stones are ordered separately from the heater, and the AC4000 white stones are a decorative top layer rather than the working stones a heater needs. Harvia's instruction for them is exact: they are “only to be used as a top layer above traditional stones, with a one box maximum per heater. For decorative use only!” Fill the heater with the traditional stones Harvia specifies for that model first, then finish the visible course with one 22 lb box of these. Note that the white stones should be washed before use and are not as durable as traditional sauna stones, so handle them with care and pile them loosely.
