Ask any Finnish sauna builder what wood goes on the bench and you’ll get a short list. Aspen is always on it.

The ProSaunas Aspen 2×3 S4SEE is a bench board surfaced four sides with eased edges: 28mm thick (1.1″) and 65mm wide (2.56″). The S4SEE finish means all four faces are planed smooth, and the edges are gently rounded so there’s no sharp corner against the back of a thigh or a shoulder blade. Narrow at 2.56″, this profile is right for backrests, skirting, and bench decks where you want a tighter slat spacing and a more delicate look. Milled in Estonia from straight-grained aspen selected for a pale, uniform texture. Sold by the linear foot in 1 and 10 ft lengths.

Why Aspen

Aspen doesn’t conduct heat to the skin the way denser woods can. At full sauna temperature it stays comfortable: you can sit directly on it without a towel and it won’t feel hot. No resin bleeds out in the heat. No splinters from the grain. We haven’t heard of a single customer with an aspen allergy, which is not something we can say about cedar. The one thing to know: this is natural aspen, not thermally modified, so it’s a softer wood and scratches a little more easily than thermo-aspen. It sands back easily. If you want a harder, more stable bench surface with a golden-brown tone instead of pale white, our thermo-aspen 2×3 bench board is the upgrade.

Where it goes

Bench tops, backrests, and skirting in any sauna style. The 2×3 width works well alongside a 2×6 bench board on the same deck (the 2×6 as the main field, the 2×3 as the backrest), or on its own for a narrow, minimalist bench. Pairs with our aspen 1×4 STS4 or Grace cladding for a matched room, or with thermo-aspen walls for a warm-pale contrast.
