Most sauna cladding profiles are fine. Grace is the one people notice. The broad shadow groove reads like a design decision, not a milling artifact, and in natural alder it looks especially warm.
The geometry: 2.52" board width, 2.2" net coverage after tongue-and-groove engagement, a clean reveal between boards that catches light and gives the wall depth. At 1.06" thick, it’s a substantial profile. Horizontal on a wall, vertical on a ceiling, it changes character in each orientation. Milled by ProSaunas in Estonia, E1 certified.
Why Alder
Alder at this width shows off what the species does well: fine, even grain with just enough color variation to keep it interesting, warm reddish-brown that deepens slightly with heat cycles, and a mild honey-like aroma. Thermal conductivity around 0.12 W/m·K, so the walls won’t scorch anyone who leans against them. E1 certified for ultra-low emissions, which matters when the wood is heating up repeatedly in an enclosed space. The honest thing to say about natural alder walls: the color will shift with moisture and use. Some people love how it patinas. If you want a fixed, stable tone, the thermally modified options hold color better. For the living warmth of a classic Finnish room, natural alder is the right call.

Where it goes
Walls and ceilings. Horizontal runs on the wall give a classic paneled look; vertical on the ceiling reads contemporary. Pairs with 2×3 or 2×6 alder bench boards for a consistent room. The shadow groove pairs especially well with directional lighting: a strip light along the ceiling line or a backlit bench skirt makes the reveals glow.
