It’s a glulam, not solid: layers of alder laminated together for stability. That matters in a sauna where humidity swings are constant. The S4SEE finish still applies (smooth on all four sides, eased edges), so the exposed parts look intentional, not rough. Why Alder
Alder is a classic Finnish sauna wood for exactly the reasons that matter here: it doesn’t overheat, it handles moisture well, and the warm tone looks right next to the bench boards it’s supporting. Thermal conductivity around 0.12 W/m·K means the support members won’t burn the back of a calf if they’re exposed. Fine grain, honey-like scent, E1 certified. The practical note: alder is softer than some alternatives, and these supports will show marks if you’re rough with them during install. Clamp carefully and drill pilot holes.
