Hukka Pisarainen Soapstone Sauna Thermometer | Fahrenheit or Celsius

40 to 280°F, on the one gauge you look at every round. Hukka carves the Pisarainen from Finnish Carelian soapstone in the shape of a water droplet, sets a steel dial into the round end and makes it in Tuupovaara, Finland, so the thing you check most often looks like it belongs on a sauna wall. Choose the Fahrenheit dial, or the Celsius dial if you learned to read sauna heat the Finnish way. It stands 7.6 in tall, sits 1 in off the wall and weighs 1.4 lb.

A drop of stone on the wall

A lot of sauna thermometers are a dial in a wooden ring. The Pisarainen is a piece of soapstone first: Hukka carves it into a droplet 7.6 in tall and 5.9 in wide, with a steel dial set into the round end and a copper-toned cap at the center where the needle turns. The Fahrenheit dial is marked from 40 to 280°F in large, plain numerals. The Celsius version is the same stone and the same shape with a Celsius dial.

Hang it where you sit

Hukka is plain about what a dial like this is: calibrated within a reasonable range and meant as an indicator, not a laboratory instrument. That is true of any dial in a hot room, because a sauna has hot and cold spots even in a small space, and the air near the ceiling runs far hotter than the air at your feet. Hang it at about head height beside the bench you use most, and the dial tells you about the air you are actually sitting in rather than the hottest corner of the room.

Fahrenheit or Celsius?

Which dial should I pick?

The one that matches how you talk about your sauna. In the US that is almost always Fahrenheit. The Celsius dial suits anyone who learned sauna in Finland, or a Finnish heater control you keep set in Celsius.

Is it the same stone either way?

Yes. Both are the same Carelian soapstone droplet at the same price. Only the dial changes.
