Spirit of Sauna
Spirit is the wall‑mounted rock basket that fixes the biggest worry with “design heaters.” You get massive steam potential without frying elements. Harvia isolates the elements inside a metal heat duct so water hits rock, not resistors. Safer, gentler löyly and longer lasting elements.
It doesn’t win speed tests. Plan up to an hour to preheat. That’s the trade‑off for softer, longer‑lasting heat that come with more rocks. If fast warm‑ups are your top priority, choose a Harvia Kip. If you want calm, enveloping steam and the ability to sit closer without harsh radiant blast, Spirit is the pick.
What makes Spirit different: stone mass, element protection, and steam character.
Benefits
- Softer heat, more steam. ~110 lb stone bed stores heat and gives smooth, even löyly. You stay in longer and enjoy it more.
- Elements protected. No direct stone‑to‑element contact. That avoids the common “basket heater burned its elements” story.
- Lower mounting helps benches. Warmer lower bench air, less stratification. Pairs well with many of our saunas for this reason.
- MyHarvia control with Wi‑Fi. Set schedules, start remotely, and check status. Try the iOS demo before you buy.
- Small clearances for a basket style. Integrated shielding focuses heat up and away, keeping nearby wood cooler.
- US‑based support. Real humans when you need them. Simple, serviceable parts if you ever do.

Best for
- Homeowners who want gentle, abundant steam over “race‑to‑temp.”
- Small to medium traditional saunas sized per the Harvia Spirit Owner’s Manual.
- Design‑forward rooms where a slimmer wall unit beats a floor tower.
Not ideal if you demand sprint preheats or extreme bench temperatures. Choose Harvia Kip for faster warm‑ups. Choose HUUM DROP to push temps into the 190°s and beyond. Harvia has a max setting of 194°F at the temp sensor locations.
Model picker
*Use the Harvia Spirit Owner’s Manual for official sizing. If you have glass, stone, or other hard surfaces, contact Sauna Marketplace to calculate effective volume from the manual. Do not follow “rules of thumb” on the internet. Every heater and hot room is different. Let us help you size to your conditions.
Hot Tip – the 6KW and 8KW have the same minimum of 177 cubic feet. With stone basket heaters there’s really no downside to going up to the 8KW if you fall within this range. The heaters will last longer and you will reach temps a little faster.

Installation & Safety
Topic | Requirement |
---|---|
Power | 240 V, 1‑phase, hardwired on a dedicated 2‑pole breaker. No plug. |
Breaker & wire | 6 kW: typically 30 A; 8 kW: typically 40 A. Copper conductors rated 90 °C. Follow manual and local code. |
Control | Digital controller and sensor per Harvia instructions. Place controller out of direct heat and splash. |
Disconnect | Provide a fixed all‑poles disconnect if required by local code. Use listed liquidtight or flexible metallic conduit to the heater. |
Minimum ceiling | 75 in minimum. If lower or clearances are tight, contact Sauna Marketplace about approved shield options. |
Clearances | Use the Spirit Owner’s Manual for exact side/back/ceiling and bench distances. Do not guess. |
Ventilation | Standard traditional sauna supply/return. Avoid drafts on the sensor. |
Mounting | Mount to solid framing. Remember the loaded weight with stones (~140 lb total). |
Safety interlocks | Overheat protection and “object‑on‑heater” lockout support safe remote start. Test after install. |
Installer | Licensed electrician required. Follow manual and local code. |
Sizing guidance
Size the heater strictly to the room volume as defined in the Harvia Spirit Owner’s Manual. If your room includes glass, stone, concrete, or other non‑insulating surfaces, contact Sauna Marketplace and we’ll calculate effective volume using the manual’s method. Do not upsize “for faster heat.” If speed matters most, choose Harvia Kip instead of Spirit.
Combos & pairing
We pair Spirit with a lot of our saunas because it keeps heat lower in the room and lets you sit closer without sharp radiant burn. If this is a commercial space or you have kids likely to brush the heater, consider a Harvia Kip or Harvia Virta with integrated heat shields.
Operation tips
- Set your schedule or start remotely with MyHarvia. Expect up to ~60 minutes to reach bathing temperature.
- Start cooler than you normally would. Then add humidity by pouring water on the stones to dial in comfort.
- Stack stones per the manual. Keep elements covered and maintain airflow gaps.
- If you ever see a cut‑out after a hard pour, let it cool and check the high‑limit reset per the manual.

Popular accessories
- Safety railing option: SP3
- Embedding flange
Remember you want to get your feet as high as possible in relation to the top of the stones. Embedding heaters into a raised floor is our favorite sauna design hack! Contact Sauna Marketplace for design ideas to improve your sauna climate.
Troubleshooting
Slow heat‑up
- Somewhat normal for Spirit’s large stone mass. Verify door seals, ventilation, and that the room is sized to spec.
- Confirm stones are loaded per manual and NOT TOO TIGHT.
- Remove top layer of stones when cool, turn on heater and confirm elements glow. Turn off immediately after confirming.
- If fast preheat is the goal, Harvia Kip is faster by design.
Breaker trips
- Confirm breaker size and copper conductor gauge per model and local code.
- Check terminations for tightness and verify controller wiring per diagram.
- Important: Do not connect the power feed for the heater through the RCD (residual current device)/GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter)!
Heater shuts off early / won’t restart
- High‑limit likely tripped. Let it cool. Reset per manual.
- Check sensor placement and shielding from direct radiant heat.
Weak steam
- Use rounded sauna stones and fill to capacity. Start at a slightly lower temp and add water to raise humidity.
FAQ
How fast does it heat?
Plan on up to an hour. That’s the trade‑off for the large stone mass and soft, pleasant heat.
Can I run it from my phone?
Yes. Use MyHarvia. Download the iOS app and try Demo Mode before you buy.
What size should I pick?
Follow the Spirit Owner’s Manual volume table. If you have glass or stone, contact us and we’ll calculate effective volume from the manual.
What stones?
Rounded olivine 5–10 cm. Fill it to spec for best steam.
Is it safe for kids around the heater?
Use a guard rail and teach safe distance. If you want more built‑in shielding, look at Harvia Kip or Virta. A wood shield can also be added around the Spirit if safety clearances are followed.
Outdoor use?
Absolutely, but keep the main power module and controller in a weather‑protected enclosure or changing room.
Warranty?
Harvia consumer warranty plus an extra 3rd year when you buy here and register within 30 days. US‑based support through Sauna Marketplace.
