Penguin Chillers builds water chillers in the United States, and the Cold Therapy Chiller is the one in their line built for a plunge tub rather than a reef tank or a brewing setup. It works without ice. It pulls heat out of the water and cycles on only when the water drifts above your set point, which is how a 7,500 BTU per hour unit runs on 450 watts and a standard household outlet.

How many gallons will the Penguin chiller hold cold?

The 3/4 HP Cold Therapy Chiller moves 7,500 BTU per hour and holds up to 100 gallons in the low 40s Fahrenheit, and into the high 30s when less outside heat reaches the water. Running cost is roughly $18 to $28 a month, low enough that Penguin has you leave it running rather than re-chill warm water later.

What is the difference between the Penguin horsepower models?

Horsepower is a BTU ladder: the 1/2 HP moves 5,000 BTU per hour, the 3/4 HP 7,500, the 1 HP 10,000 and the 1 1/2 HP 15,000. The Cold Therapy Chiller is the plunge model, pump and filter already in it. The numbered water chillers are indoor units you pair with your own pump, filter and tubing.

Where does the chiller have to sit relative to the tub?

The pump gravity primes, so set the chiller within 3 feet of the tub drain with its base level with or below the bottom of the tub, and keep the hose runs short. It plugs into a standard 110 to 120 volt outlet, draws 3.9 amps through the 10 foot GFCI cord, and runs at 56 dBA.

Can the chiller stay outside?

The housing is rainproof and rated for outdoor use, so it sits beside the tub with no enclosure or extra weatherproofing. Penguin has you disconnect it when temperatures approach freezing, so drain it and store it above freezing over winter. The 150 micron canister is washable, and the chiller carries a one year warranty.
