Hukka’s bullet is specific: “100% authentic Finnish Carelian Soapstone made in Tuupovaara, Finland.” Hukka’s own notes on the material, it does not absorb any liquids or tastes; it has been tested and approved to be used in preparing or storing food products; it accumulates both heat and cold and holds either for a long time. Where should I mount a sauna thermometer and hygrometer?

Mount a sauna thermometer and hygrometer at head height for someone sitting on the upper bench, on a wall away from the heater. Mounting height changes the reading directly: higher up captures the hottest air near the ceiling and lower down captures the cooler air near the floor, so the height that matters is the one where people actually sit. The wall with the door, at least 10 inches clear of the glass, is the placement our support team most often recommends for a reading of the room's ambient conditions.

Why does my wall thermometer read differently from my heater's controller?

A wall gauge and a heater's control sensor measure different parts of the room, so the two readings rarely match. Hukka states the limits of a coil gauge plainly for this product: “By their nature, saunas are not an isotherm and will have many different hot and cold spots, even within a small area… They are indicative only, and are not sold as a scientific-grade measuring device.” Mounting height and distance from the heater are the two biggest factors in the gap.
