Not everyone needs clear grade. Some people want the look of real cedar, the weight of a thick bench board, and a price that doesn’t make the whole project feel irresponsible. That’s what the STK cedar line is for.
Western Red Cedar 2×4 STK S4SEE is 1.5″ thick and 3.5″ wide (1.5 in x 3.5 in), surfaced four sides with two eased edges. It’s the same width as the VG 2×4, different grade. STK means Select Tight Knot: the knots are tight and sound, not loose or filled. This is a bench board, not structural lumber, so the knots are an aesthetic choice more than a strength one. Available in 1 ft and 8 ft lengths. Milled in Canada.
Why Cedar (and the honest part)
The 2×4 thickness gives a bench a sense of substance. You can see the edge, the surface sits solid, and the cedar aroma comes through properly when the room heats. For a builder who wants that classic cabin-sauna feel without the clear-grade price tag, STK cedar is a reasonable route.
The downside: STK grade moves a little more through heat cycles than VG, and knots are thermal weak points over years of use. Gaps and minor checking around knots are possible over time. Our thermo-aspen holds its dimensions tighter than any untreated cedar, STK or clear. If dimensional stability matters more than the cedar experience, thermo wood is the better call. We sell both because different rooms have different right answers.

Where it goes
Benches, backrests, and skirting. The 2×4 thickness pairs well with a simple notched or lag-bolted bench frame. Mix with VG cedar boards on the top bench surface if you want the knot character on lower tiers and a cleaner top. Pair cedar benches with aspen if skin-contact temperature is a priority.
