Spruce

Spruce is one of the oldest sauna woods there is. Long before anyone was importing exotic boards, builders across Northern Europe lined their saunas in pale, knotty spruce because it grew out the back door and it worked. Pull up a bench in an old Finnish sauna and odds are good you are sitting in a spruce room.

There is one catch worth knowing before you order: natural spruce can weep sap in the heat. A bead of pitch on a wall is character. A bead of pitch on the bench you just sat on is not. That is why we stock natural spruce as wall cladding, the PROSAUNAS 1×4 T&G STS4 profile, and leave the bench duty to its thermally modified cousin.

The payoff is the look and the price: a light, clean, even grain that keeps a small or modern sauna feeling bright instead of closed in, at a number that is hard to beat. Clad your walls and ceiling in it, then sit on something with the resin already cooked out.
