Four colors
- Clear keeps the natural color and grain of the wood.
- White is a pale wash, with the grain still showing through.
- Gray turns the wood a muted, cool tone.
- Black is the darkest of the four.
ProSaunas says extra coats increase the intensity of the tinted waxes, so start with one coat and add more until the color is where you want it. It also softens the look of scratches and blemishes from frequent use.
For the inside of the sauna
The can reads “Natural water-based sealant, for saunas or other interior wood surfaces.” This is a wax for the hot room, and ProSaunas says it works best on the surfaces your skin touches. For the outside of an outdoor sauna, ProSaunas makes SaunaShield exterior sauna paint instead.
How much and how long
One can covers about 44 to 63 square feet per coat, applied with a brush or a sponge, and dries in 1 to 2 hours. ProSaunas gives it a retention time of 3 years.
