    Harvia HPC3 Safety Railing | Cilindro 6 and 8 kW, Heat-Treated Birch

    A Cilindro is a cylinder of hot steel standing at shin height in a small dark room, and the first time somebody stands up too fast next to one they find that out. The HPC3 is Harvia’s own guard for the 6 and 8 kW Cilindro: four heat-treated birch arches held off the heater on stainless steel mounts, 20.1 inches square. It keeps skin off the shell without hiding the heater, and the birch reads as part of the room rather than as safety equipment bolted on.

    The one accessory we argue for

    We are usually happy to let people skip accessories. Not this one. A floor-standing cylinder heater puts its hottest surface exactly where a knee, a calf or a child’s hand goes, and the difference between a contact burn and a near miss is a two inch gap. The HPC3 provides that gap.

    How it is built

    Four wooden arches, joined to each other and mounted to the heater on stainless steel brackets. The wood is heat-treated birch, which is the right choice here for the same reason it is the right choice for benches: thermal modification drives the moisture out so the timber stays dimensionally stable through years of heat cycling instead of cupping and cracking. It measures 20.1 inches wide by 20.1 inches deep and weighs 5.1 pounds.

    Which heater it fits

    This is the guard for the Harvia Cilindro in 6 kW and 8 kW. The 10.5 kW model takes a different railing, so check your heater’s kW before ordering. If you want the version with lighting built into it, look at the HPCU4LUL railing with LED.
