Start with the rule that decides everything else. Finnmark’s owner’s manual for the FD-1, FD-2 and FD-3 (Finnmark Designs Manual, updated 2023 V2-1) requires a Finnmark cover for any outdoor placement, and requires the room to sit under an awning or overhang. On a porch, patio, balcony or deck, treat it as part of the installation rather than as an accessory.

What it is made of

It lives outdoors year round (UV, rain, freeze and thaw) so the stack is a marine one, and the two fabrics are warranted separately by the mills that make them.

• Roof: waterproof Aqualon, warranted by the fabric manufacturer for five years on color fastness, fabric integrity and mildew resistance.
• Sides: Sauleda marine canvas, from a marine and awning fabric mill in Barcelona. Ten years on the same three points, with free replacement fabric through year seven and a declining schedule after that, 50% off in year eight, 25% in year nine, 15% in year ten.
• Thread: Finnmark specifies "marine grade thread made from UVR polyester that will last the lifetime of your cover".
• Hardware: two marine-grade heavy-duty #10 zippers, plus 15 stainless steel snaps on brass and nickel studs with 3/8 in #1 Phillips recess-head self-tapping screws. Finnmark’s reason for the snaps: "to ensure your Sauna Cover will stay in place in moderately windy environments".

How it is designed to be used

The door is on the left side: a vertical roll-up panel with three permanently attached ties that secure it at the top, so you can open the room without taking the cover off. Above it is a valance Finnmark describes as decorative and functional, giving the sauna extra moisture protection. A weather slot runs the power cord out of the top of the rear panel, on this model, on the left side.

Fit

The FD1 cover is 38 x 38 x 78 in in Avena, cut for the FD-1’s 38 x 38 in footprint. No other room in the FD line has that footprint, and no other cover in the line is that size: the FD-2 cover is 48 x 44, the FD-3 is 72 x 46, the FD-4 is 49 x 49 and the FD-5 is 75 x 64.

Siting and care

Finnmark’s manual asks for a solid surface in a dry area, freestanding rather than built in, with a minimum 3 in clearance from the top and all sides of the room. Keep the snaps clipped and the zippers closed when the room is not in use. Finnmark’s care instruction is short: do not machine wash the cover, surface wipe only with mild soap and water, and hang it to dry. Neither fabric mill allows bleach. Published warranty exclusions include water leakage through seams and damage from animals, falling objects or acts of nature.
