What it does

Narvi’s description is plain: “With the aid of an installation base, the sauna heater can be installed in a sauna that has a wooden or paved floor. The height of all installation bases can be adjusted. In the case of slanted floors, the adjustable legs can be used to straighten the sauna heater. The installation bases have been made of rustproof steel.”

It measures 21.7 in. wide by 24.4 in. deep and the legs adjust between 2.8 and 3.7 in. That adjustment does real work: sauna floors slope to a drain, deck boards cup, slabs are rarely dead flat.

Narvi does not treat this as optional

The installation manuals for the NC, the Kuru, the Kaamos 20 and the Narvi 30 all carry the same rule:

• Concrete floor. The stove may sit directly on a concrete floor at least 2 in thick, unless underfloor heating cables or pipes run beneath it, in which case an installation base is required to shield them from the stove’s thermal radiation.
• Combustible or tiled floor, underfloor heating. “A Narvi installation base must be installed under the sauna heater, which will protect the floor, moisture barrier and underfloor heating pipes or cables from the thermal radiation of the sauna heater.”
• And the part people forget. “A piece of sheet metal must be installed in front of the installation base, which extends at least 3.9 in over the sides of the heater hatch and at least 15.7 in in front of the sauna heater. The sheet metal edges facing the sauna heater must be turned up, so that coal cannot get under the installation base.”

That sheet-metal apron is not part of this kit. Budget for it separately if your floor is combustible.

Check the footprint

The base top is 21.7 x 24.4 in (21.7 x 24.4 in.). Narvi’s published stove footprints, width by depth: NC 16 19.7 x 22.8 in, NC 20 21.3 x 22.8 in, NC 24 22.8 x 22.8 in, Kuru 14 16.5 x 18.7 in, Kuru 20 18.1 x 18.7 in, Kaamos 20 18.9 x 19.7 in, Narvi 30 21.1 x 26.4 in. The NC 16, the NC 20, both Kurus and the Kaamos 20 all sit inside this base. The NC 24 is wider than it and the Narvi 30 is deeper than it, so measure those two against the base before ordering that pairing.

When you may not need it

Read the rule the other way round: if your floor is non-combustible, concrete at least 2 in thick, and there is no underfloor heating running beneath the stove, Narvi permits the stove to sit directly on it. Going straight onto the floor also sits the stove a little lower.
