Grade first, brand second

The single most important thing about a sauna stone is its size, not its label. Electric heaters need 2 to 4 inch stone. The elements have to make contact and the pile has to sit close around them, and oversized stone leaves voids that let elements run hot in open air. These are the 2 to 4 inch grade.

Split-face

Broken faces instead of tumbled ones. More surface for water to hit, sharper edges to flash it off, and a looser stack with the air gaps that let heat move through the basket. It is the shape that makes löyly rather than hiss.

Olivine diabase

The dense volcanic rock that Finnish heater makers use, chosen for heat capacity and for holding together through thousands of cycles from cold to full heat and back.

Buy a spare box

IKI say it plainly and we agree: every natural stone is unique in shape and size, so buy an extra box and choose the ones that fit. Freight on stone is not cheap and paying it twice because you came up half a basket short is worse than having a few spares in the garage.

Stacking

Loose, not tight. Big ones at the bottom, smaller toward the top, and never wedge them in around the elements. The goal is a pile air can climb through. A packed basket heats slower, stresses the elements and gives you less steam for the same power.

Refresh them

Pull the basket once a year, discard anything cracked, wash the survivors and rebuild. Stones are the cheapest part of a heater and the one that quietly decides how good the steam is.
