A sauna swings from bone dry to steam-soaked in minutes, and untreated boards move with every swing. The abachi in these panels goes through a heat-treatment process that steadies the wood for exactly that environment, deepens its color, and gives it a pleasant, long-lasting scent that reads as part of the ritual. The face is sanded smooth, so it is comfortable at shoulder height behind a bench.
The pattern
Each hexagon measures 6.7 by 7.6 inches, big enough to read from across the room. A panel runs 30 inches wide by 13.5 inches tall and about 0.6 inches thick, covering 2.1 square feet; the box of six covers 12.7 square feet. Panels are CNC-machined and lock together like puzzle pieces, so the joints line up without exposed fasteners.

Care and planning
